Why Reels are hard to avoid in the regular app
Reels are not a separate destination that stays politely out of the way. They appear in navigation, recommendations and shared links. Even when you open Instagram for one message, the interface keeps offering a path into short video.
Awhile changes the browsing surface instead of asking you to win the same willpower contest every time. The Reels destinations are hidden in Awhile’s browser, and links that try to hand you to the native app are blocked inside that browsing session.
What still works when Reels are hidden
You can still sign in to the real Instagram website, read and send messages, open profiles, check notifications and manage your own profile. Hiding Reels is one filter, not a replacement account or a simulated social feed.
If the home feed is useful but Reels are not, leave Feed enabled. If both are a problem, hide both. Explore and Stories have their own switches as well.
The limitation to understand before installing
Awhile works only inside Awhile. Mobile operating systems do not let it rewrite Meta’s native Instagram interface. If you open the native Instagram app separately, its normal Reels interface is still there.
Instagram can also change its mobile website. Awhile updates its filter selectors when that happens, but a web change can temporarily affect a filter. The support page explains how to refresh selectors and report a reproducible breakage without sharing private DM screenshots.

Open Awhile and sign in
Awhile loads instagram.com directly. Your Instagram credentials are entered on Instagram’s page, not into an Awhile account.

Open the filter menu
Use the two-finger gesture or floating bubble selected during onboarding.

Turn on the Reels filter
Keep Feed, Explore or Stories on or off according to your own use. Each filter is independent.

Open Awhile for DMs, profiles and short check-ins instead of opening the native app by reflex.

Can I keep Instagram DMs when Reels are hidden?
